Proof that a season can be turned around on a single game, the Wildcats stand atop the Century League with a 37-22 victor over Foothill High School last Friday. This after starting the season with four straight loses.

The season got of to a rough start as the Wildcats played against Valencia High School Sept. 3. The Tigers won by a final score of 13-0 in the non-league game. Throughout the night, the Wildcats offense struggled to put points on the board and were shut out for the first time of the season.

After this game, the Wildcats focused on working with the offense and were able to show some differences in their game against the Woodbridge Warriors.

On Sept. 10, the Wildcats came out against the Warriors and revealed a new, high-powered offense resulting in five touchdowns. However, failures on the defensive side of the ball resulted in 58 points--a Woodbridge record.

Despite the loss, Robb Perrance, head coach, saw a silver lining: “We functioned very well as a whole offensively and showed marked improvement from game one, against Valencia.”

The Warriors started strong and were able to get the early lead by the end of the first half with a score of 16-14. However, the Wildcats were able to regroup at the half and take the lead 35-31 by the end of the third quarter.

“There were not any real major half-time adjustments. We showed the players what the opponent was doing and then encouraged them to focus on their assignments, execute our game plan, and give it their best effort one play at a time,” said Perrance.

The Wildcats held up their defense as long as they could but were unable to prevent four more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“Our defense got tired, and the other team just out hustled us,” said Josh Vizcaya, sophomore.

Vizcaya rushed for a season high 293 yards on 15 carries.

Following this loss, the team looked to secure their first win of the season against Diamond Bar High School. However, after leading in the fourth quarter, 28-23, the Wildcats allowed Diamond Bar to come back and win by a final of 31-28.

“We know we can win. We all just need to do our jobs and work our hardest. Nobody has given up and neither have our coaches because we all know we are capable of winning games and being the Century League champs,” said Travis Halm, junior.

In their victory over Foothill High School, Vizcaya carried the load for the offense as he had a total of 42 carries and scoring four touchdowns.

With a win in its league opener the Wildcats are a game closer to “winning games and being the Century League champs.” Next up, the homecoming game against 0-4 El Dorado.
